And that's what fascinated him (Alex Randolph). He
    21:52
was fascinated with how this game was going to create interesting decisions
    21:59
and problems and how the game was going to feel and what the sort of the underlying sort of emotions and
    22:05
psychology were going to be in how this game would feel to play.
    22:55
the fundamentals of the game but then all games need a development phase where you you take the the basic
    23:02
design and you kind of clean it up and you refine it and you optimize it and you balance out everything else that
    23:08
needs to be done and you end up with a finished product.

    26:17
Yeah, for sure. I mean I think that uh you you have to go out there and you
    26:22
have to experience games and uh and you and you also have to observe people
    26:29
playing games because um you know the games are sort of multi-dimensional. So
    26:35
you have the rules of the game, you have the the actual mechanics of how a game
    26:42
operates, but then you have all of the sort of
    26:47
emotional and sort of, you know, uh sort of decision making
    26:53
um components that the game mechanics generate. Um and and then you have all
    26:59
of the unwritten rules of the game, right? just the rules of social interaction which are not part of the
    27:05
game. They're just natural parts of how people interact and spend time together.
    27:10
Um so you really need to sort of think about all of it because
    27:16
what you're trying to do often times in a game is to sort of trigger or lean
    27:21
into natural elements of how people sort of
    27:26
interact and socialize anyway. Um, so you know, for example, um, you know,
    27:34
sort of pulling someone's leg or kind of like a little bit of trash talk. That's
    27:39
not limited to when you're playing a game. That's part of how people interact
    27:45
socially anyway. Yeah. So, it's an example of where, hey, you know, what can I do in this game that
    27:51
gives people an opportunity to trash talk, right? what's an opportunity to to kind of like make that a moment that
    27:58
people can, you know, uh can sort of springboard off of. So, you know, the
    28:03
thing that fascinates me with games is some people get very very focused on the
    28:09
mechanics, right? And that's that's that's their sort of uh their their sort
    28:15
of core uh the thing that they pay attention to. I tend to look at it much more.
    28:21
So, I I tend to lean more towards simpler games. And it's not because I'm
    28:26
not interested in mechanics. It's just that to me, the mechanics are the least
    28:32
important because it's the outcome of the mechanics that what is what matters.

    34:44
game. Um Games Workshop would be responsible for doing all of the
    34:49
miniatures and the sculpting. Yeah. um and would help with sort of you know
    34:55
providing some sort of uh play testing and some sort of insights into uh the
    35:01
world of uh of Warhammer. So again, a lot of the early quests that I wrote,
    35:08
um, I sort of wrote them in a sort of fairly generic way and then Games Workshop would reframe them to sort of
    35:14
put place names and characters that were from the world of Warhammer. Um, just to
    35:20
sort of give it more of that um, uh, sort of association with uh, with the
    35:26
    the World of Games Workshop.
    36:04
manufacture and so like how how long a period was that? So it was um it was pretty quick. Um I
    36:12
mean I joined um I joined Hasbro in ' 87 and HeroQuest came out in '89
    37:08
to work seriously on on HeroQuest. Um, and the game came out in 1989 and it was
    37:15
actually one of the the top selling games in the UK that year. It sold
    37:21
120,000 units, which was uh a huge number for the UK back in those days.
    38:55
Yeah. But basically the idea was I want to put role playing in a box.
    38:55
Yeah. But basically the idea was I want to put role playing in a box. I want I want this single purchase to
    39:04
basically give you all of the experience and all of the trappings of role
    39:09
playing. Right? So I want a dungeon master. I want a dungeon master sat behind a screen. I want a dungeon that
    39:18
you're going to explore. I want the miniatures that you're going to use to explore. Um, I want to bring that
    39:23
dungeon to life and and make it sort of three-dimensional. So, you know, a lot
    39:29
of ultimately what Hero Quest sort of became, and I think in large
    39:37
part what made Hero Quest so impactful, um, is that
    39:45
it it it wasn't just about the mechanics of the game, right? I mean, it sort of goes back to what we've talked about
    39:52
sort of, you know, previously, which is when you just look on the back of the box and you see all of that colorful 3D
    39:58
furniture and you see all those cool Citadel miniatures and, you know, someone sat behind the screen. I mean,
    40:04
it's just it's like it's it's another world the likes of which certainly back then, you
    40:12
know, no one had seen before. Um, and I think that's what made it so appealing to look at for for kids in the 80s. And
    40:20
I think that's what made it so impactful for people who played it. It was like, wow, it's like this is a game like I've
    40:26
never played before. There's this story and there's all of these secrets and things are happening that I had no idea.
    40:33
um you know and there's a sense of adventure which you know for your average sort of family and sort of like
    40:40
you know 10 to 13year-old at the time um you might have experienced some of that
    40:45
sense of adventure in reading a fighting fantasy book but for the most part there was nothing out there that that
    40:51
delivered that same kind of experience.

    39:18
esplorerete. Voglio le miniature che userete per esplorare. Voglio dare vita a quel
    39:23
dungeon e renderlo in qualche modo tridimensionale. Quindi, sapete, molto
    39:29

    Ciao a tutti,

    Grazie a tutti

    1:07:15
Um it it's always, you know, sort of deeply satisfying and and um you
    1:07:23
know, sort of it makes me sort of humble in a way when I hear from folks because I I regularly get people reach out to
    1:07:30
me. um you know they they find my contacts sort of somehow or they you
    1:07:35
know uh reach out to me across social media and basically tell their story of
    1:07:40
how uh you know maybe Heroquest or Battle Masters or some other game was their sort of entry into the hobby and
    1:07:47
how it led to you know other things whether it's just a lifetime of playing games or whether
    1:07:52
it led them to want to design their own games. um you know it's always very very
    1:07:57
satisfying and again it goes back to my you know uh I sort of jokingly call myself the chief smile maker at uh
    1:08:05
company I am the only person so um but but it's that sort of philosophy of like
    1:08:12
what I've increasingly come to realize over time is what I enjoy about designing games is that it creates
    1:08:19
moments for people to enjoy. So I'm putting more smiles into the world than I take out of it. Um, and we can talk
    1:08:26
about this more in another time, but even when I look back at HeroQuest, um, HeroQuest was really the
    1:08:32
culmination, albeit, you know, my first sort of published game that, um, of of
    1:08:39
everything we've talked about, right? It's got the dimensionality. It's got the theater. It's got the evolving story. Uh it's got that sort of
    1:08:46
immersion. But most importantly, and it was very very deliberate choice at the
    1:08:52
time, is that the center pages of the Quest book were left blank with an invitation to say, "Design your own."
    1:08:59
Because what I've always enjoyed about games, I don't think I've ever played a game exactly the way it was intended to
    1:09:06
be played. Right. Um I even when I was young, I would play a game and then I
    1:09:12
would decide these are the things I want to change to make it better or make it better for me. Yeah.
    1:09:17
Um so when I did Hero Quest, right from the outside, it's like it was
    1:09:22
always my goal. It's like I want people to play this game and then I want them to make it their own. I want them to add
    1:09:29
to it because I knew from my own experience that when you start designing your own
    1:09:36
tabletop scenarios to go with the armies that you collected, when you start tinkering with the rules yourself
    1:09:42
because you want to make them cooler or better or customize them for yourself or your friends, that's when you really get
    1:09:49
immersed and and you own it. It's yours. It's not It's not a game anymore. It's your game

    1:07:52
li ha portati a voler progettare i propri giochi. Ehm, sai, è sempre molto, molto
    1:07:57
    1:09:49
e lo possiedi. È tuo. Non è più un gioco. È il tuo gioco.

    Alcune interessanti trascrizioni dell'intervista:
So I was originally um from the sort of Twickenham area, West London around
    7:04
close to Richmond for those who uh you don't know where Twickenham is. Um not far from the rugby ground actually. We
    7:11
lived about a mile just a little over a mile from the rugby ground. So on a on a good day when there was an international
    7:17
match, you could hear the cheering. Um and uh pretty much spent most of my life
    7:23
in uh in the sort of Twick Twin Richmond area. Um until I was in my sort of early
    7:29
30s when I moved down to uh Swindon, right?
    when I
    7:48
first started work I was working in um in a bank coming out of uh out of school
    7:54
um from working in a bank I through you know uh sort of happen chance ended up
    8:00
working at Games Workshop um at their sort of Ding Road store in Hammersmith
    8:05
and from there through again other happen Chance I ended up working at Mil Bradley. I left Milton Bradley in 92,
    8:13
did my own thing for a couple of years and then needed to get back into a full-time job and happened to have the
    8:20
opportunity to go and work for Bluebird Toys who were based in Swindon.
    10:02
So um when I was working for Bluebird, I worked there for probably four or five
    10:08
years. Um and at the end, um Bluebird were were basically bought out by
    10:15
Mattel. So uh there was a competitive or a sort of you know an aggressive
    10:21
takeover attempt. Um, and you know, long story short, you know, through a lot of,

    10:28
you know, various options, Mattel decided to buy Blueberg primarily because they wanted to safeguard
    10:35
um the Poly Pocket uh product line which they um distributed internationally.
    10:42
So, you know, I basically found myself without a job and and looked at various options. Mattel offered me a position to
    10:49
go work in their games team um in Elsagundo and the on the west coast. But
    10:54
as it happened, Hasbro were also looking to ramp up their games team and they
    11:00
also offered me a job um on the east coast. And you know, I like the passage
    11:06
of the seasons. I'm more of an autumn winter man than you know, forever son of California.
    11:12
Yeah. Um, plus, you know, Hasbro had a deeper portfolio of games and it was going back to work with brands that I
    11:19
knew well. Um, so moved here in 2000 and that was, you know, 25 years ago.
    11:25
Nice. Jeepers. So, what do you like about living in the States compared to the UK? M so it's fascinating because um
    13:12
It's like I've got three daughters um one of whom is just finished university
    13:18
the other uh the middle one uh sort of graduated high school uh this year and
    13:23
it's interesting to watch them go through it all. Yeah. Um because it's not what I experienced.
    21:57
wasn't much in the way of of sort of computer games or console games. I mean, there was the there was the Atari. Um, I
    22:04
remember when I was in my sort of early 20s. Um, you know, buying a Commodore 64
    22:13
and being very excited about, you know, all of the games that that would sort of bring. Um, but of course, you know,
    22:21
computer gaming at at that time was in its infancy. Um, and so I I do think
    22:28
that if I had been born later, I may have dabbled a little bit more with with
    22:35
computer games and and and what have you. But that being said,
    22:40
um, when I look at what it is that I find most rewarding in games, and it's kind of core to a lot of my sort of
    22:47
philosophy around games is I really
    22:52
enjoy the spectacle, right? So, I was a war gamer um and a tabletop sort of gamer before I
    23:00
became a board gamer. So, I was already collecting soldiers and designing, you know, tabletop war games and playing
    23:07
rule sets like, you know, Charles Grant's the war game and Featherstone.
    31:52
to play. Right? Sometimes you've only got 30 40 minutes and the players are sat around the table. So you need
    31:58
something that's a quick learn and a quick play.

Ciao a tutti. Come molti ho riscoperto HQ dopo mooolti anni.
